Segment #10: The Collapse of the PM's Office – 265-284

Context:______________________________________

Drucker shifts to discussing Barak's handling of internal affairs, focusing also on minor incidents regarding workspace in the PM's office and several more 'petty- politics' issues. I chose to cite one passage in this content, even though Mr. Greenberg is not directly referred to in it, because it sheds light on the effects the pollsters had on Barak's management, in the eyes of his close aids and officials..

The segment is cited from the resignation letter of Mr. Shimon Battat, Barak's deputy head of office, in which he presents the chain of events leading to his resignation.

"In an interview to Maariv, Shimon Battat said the following: "The business has lately become intolerable and I will not live with that. We were supposed to turn the PM office to an elite group, a 'MATCAL' 1 that will tackle the impossible and win, though Barak, instead of choosing to be a commander, he functioned more like a platoon commander of the Afghan Army. We have become a banana republic, Ehud – do not try to accomplish it all by yourself [..] One can not operate solely on polls and research, when the policy of the polls takes over state policy we are in deep trouble. I have no problems with policy that manufactures messages, though when messages dictate the policy – that's dangerous. One can not do every evening, what the polls show that people want to see the next day" [Emphasis mine, J.A]
